Template Versioning
See every saved version of an email, preview an older one, and restore it without losing anything.
Every time an email changes, Mailcrate keeps the previous state as a version. If a change goes wrong, or you want to know what an email looked like when a campaign went out, you can look back and restore it.
What counts as a version
A new version is recorded each time the email is saved with a change: its content, subject, preview text, sender, Reply To, BCC or name. Saving without changing anything doesn't add one.
Versions are recorded however the change was made:
- Saved in the editor, by you or a teammate.
- API push: a developer pushed new code for a React Email template, or changed the email through the API. These show via API key instead of a person's name.
- Restored: someone restored an older version (see below).
Browse the history
Open the email under Emails and choose History. Versions are grouped by day, newest first. Each one shows:
- Its number, such as v12, and Current on the version the email is at now.
- Who saved it and when.
- What changed, such as "Subject, Content".
- A Restored or API push label when it wasn't an ordinary save.
Preview an older version
Open a version's menu and choose Preview. The email shows that version, read-only, with a banner saying which one you are viewing. From there choose Restore this version, or Exit to go back to editing.
Restore a version
Choose Restore this version, from the version's menu or from the preview banner, and confirm.
Restoring never deletes anything. It brings the email back to how it was in that version and records the result as a new version at the top of the history, so the versions in between, including the one you were on, stay available. Right after a restore, Undo in the confirmation message takes you back to where you were.
Unsaved changes are replaced
Restoring replaces whatever is in the editor. If you have changes you haven't saved, the confirmation says so; save them first if you want to keep them as a version of their own.
Two things are not brought back exactly, and Mailcrate tells you when that happens:
- If the sender the old version used has been deleted, the email is restored without a sender. Choose one in Settings before you send it.
- If the old version's template slug is now used by another email, the email keeps its current slug.
What a change means for sends
- Future sends use the current version. Campaigns that haven't gone out yet, journeys, transactional messages and API sends all pick up the change, so check Where it's used before restoring.
- Emails already on their way keep the version they were queued with. A campaign that is sending, or an A/B test whose winner is still to go out, isn't affected by an edit or a restore halfway through.
